Otondo's out of Orientation Camp - Useful Tips for Survival

Corpers weeee!!!!

The new bees (otondo's) are out of camp. Their 3weeks orientation has finally come to an end. Welcome to the Team guys.

Things loads of the new corpers are going to be worried about now are;

1) Securing a job at their Primary Place of Assignment:
On the day you leave camp you would be or were handed a paper containing details of the area and organisation you have been posted to serve.

On getting this letter, you can either rejoice or be sad. In the sense that, sometimes people rejoice when there are posted to areas that they think would be more fun to be in. While others get posted to very horrible locations with no idea of how to survive.

Well however you see it manage it. Some corpers get lucky and are reposted back to join their family or back to a specific location of choice. This is only taken into consideration after an application is made based on health grounds or marriage.

Avoid giving money to unreliable individuals (workers) who claim they can help you "work" your posting to another place. Many have been scammed and delayed. So be warned. It's better you settle for what you received.

After all, one of the aims of the programme is to familiarise one with another culture.

So my fellow corpers just accept your PPA & Given Location in good faith.

2) Opening the Nysc bank account:
This is for the monthly Allawee. It's very significant that you do this before travelling home. Else you would miss your first and maybe 2nd monthly NYSC salary.

Well I missed mine and I was told I couldn't apply for it. According to the person "if I apply for the allowance it might lead to being remobilised". That means going camp to camp to start all over again.

Am guessing your wondering what could have happened? Well I went home after camp for treatment and returned with a letter from my doctor yet it wasn't taken into consideration.
In addition to that, I was still given a query to explain my reasons for going home which I did. Yet no allawee
Only God knows what they did with the money.
So sweethearts please go to Local your Government Area (LGA) and open your bank account.

3) Most importantly Accomodation:
NYSC makes available an Accomodation space called the 'corpers Lodge'. First place everyone runs to for shelter.

Some churches for example Redeem also accomodates corpers in a place called 'Family House'. Corpers are allowed to stay free for a certain period of time until they are able to find a home. If one decides to remain, then you can then begin to contribute some money for upkeep.

Some are comfortable staying in these Accomodations mentioned. While others would prefer to live in the comfort of their own homes with guaranteed privacy.

When house hunting, use a letting Agent. They make it easier for you by reducing the amount of time you spend going to view unsuitable houses.  When choosing a space of your own you must ensure that there is;

a) Running water else you would fetch from a well till you pass out.
b) Electricity: This you can determine by asking questions except you are comfortable having a generator. For me I can't stand noise so I ain't got one.
c) close proximity to shops and work: you don't want spend so much getting to the shops to restock your kitchen or other personal items. And also if you find yourself in a very demanding job you wouldn't want to be late. Would you?

Ask your friends who helped them secure their place, so as to determine if the person might be of help to you too.

Don't pay money without being sure that the Accomodation you paying for is yours. If possible demand that you sign a contract stating out the tenant, the landlord or agent, how long you are to occupy the space and so on...

Signatures of all parties and a witness should also be on the contract.

All these advice are just useful tips which would help you avoid making unwanted mistakes and wrong choices. It's just a matter of being very careful and calculative.

Don't forget to have fun... Once all of these is settled you can agree with your PPA as to when you should resume work. Ask them to please give you sometime to return home for your luggages. You can now use that opportunity to refresh and get set for work and many others.

I hope this helps someone out there.

xoxo!!!

Muslim arrested by Christ

A gentle young man and I got talking and along the line he mentioned to me about him being a Christian but was raised a Muslim.

His journey to christainity started when he was 17yrs old. He felt that as a Muslim he wasn't in the right religion. He mentioned his conversion to be a personal decision.

As a child he used to be forced to attend the Islamic centre. He also kept telling his mum about his decision to be a christain. He had to obey his parents till he was old enough to stand on his decision.

On a faithful Sunday he was sitting in front of their home where he was approached by christain youths from Redeem Church. He was invited for a youth programme and that was how he got arrested by Jesus Christ.

He was baptised in a Redeem church and has been on the journey for 8years now. He noted that his friends and family Changed towards him for his decision.

For 2years from the time he accepted Christ his mum was unhappy with him.
He hopes to bring his mum to christ while his dad on the other hand is not happy with him.

Above all, he says he feels "free and happy". His also very active in participating in youth programmes and holds a welfare position.

When asked if he would advise people to convert? He says ofcourse he would stating that "you shall know the truth and it shall set you free".

He mentions the challenges faced as a convert but suggests that a new convert finds another convert to talk to. Someone  to take as a guardian.

The guardian should then ensure that meetings are arranged to discuss any issues faced.

His been able to covert three other individuals and that they are very active in attending the activities of the church.

He would like to be a pastor and have his own ministry.

The ministry is moving. Christ is everything.

Unemployment in Nigeria/Entrepreneurship

This is a very big issue in Nigeria and many other countries. A situation where most youth are affected and left without a means of earning.

Well for those of you who missed out from the radio show on Saturday. Here is what we discussed.

The focus was on unemployment amongst youths in Nigeria and the other was entrepreneurship (challenges faced and recommendations)

Alongside the show with me was another entrepreneur who goes by the name Mr Femi. He was asked for some reasons why he thinks there is a high level of unemployment in Nigeria. He listed

1.Lack of Power Supply (Electricity)
2.Lack of skills
3.Not enough jobs
4.The Governemnt not providing enough jobs for the people.

Well in addition to that is;

5. Poor quality of education
6. Negligence of Agricultural resources
7. Corruption

We can all agree that these are some of the causes of unemployment in Nigeria.
According to Information Nigeria, 80% of Nigerian Youths were unemployed as at June 2014.

New research by Vanguard shows that the unemployment rate in Nigeria by January 2015 is as high as 50%.

Back to the gist, the other invited speaker with me on the radio show was not very happy with the Governemnt. He had a lot to say about the government and how poorly it tackled the issue of unemployment in Nigeria.

Not disagreeing with him but how long can we blame the Governemnt?

I believe there are things we can do on our own to help ourselves.

This is where Entrepreneurship comes in.
"Entrepreneurship is process of designing a new business". Besides being able to start up a new business we all know there are challenges faced in managing it.

Although unemployment remains an issue, we find some youths branching out into becoming entrepreneurs. This would have to be based on area of interest.

So on the matter of blaming the government about not been able to provide enough jobs, I would advice youths to critically get involved in skills aqusition programmes.

We find that we lack one skill or the other when we seek for jobs. However it is significant to get yourself trained in various areas.

If you love hair-dressing, go to a nearby saloon and start as an intern, perfect your skills and then you can decide to start up on your own or be retained as a full staff.

I would also like to use this medium to encourage not just the Governemnt but also other multi million naira companies out there to start up programmes for the youths. These programmes once completed can lead into gaining full time jobs in the organisation. With these programmes in place, the youths are taught and trained in areas that are useful for the future roles to be occupied. Once this has been put in place, proposals can then be put forward to the Governemnt for sponsorship etc.

If unemployment continues to rise what are the hopes of we NYSC CORPERS? After service then what?

As for Entrepreneurs on the other hand, I would say welldone. Although you maybe faced with an issue or the other causing a decline in business. Not to worry, believe in your brand and remain consistent.

For those who want to become entrepreneurs, well the choice is in your hands. Come up with a brilliant idea you know would sell. For example It's like planning for a wedding, you know how many guests you expecting, the location, the food to be served etc. Draw out your plan on a paper... Evaluate the necessary details. If possible have a close friend or family go over it again with you.

Rome wasn't built in a day people. If the government ain't helping you, help yourself.

Please participate in the discussion.

Should we continue to wait for the government?

This was a tough one to get used to... The environment on clearance days is always very busy. Corpers on the move, some going to print a copy or copies of papers... ' Get ready to see loads of white sheet of papers ' and also a scotching sun to complete the menu.

You would see a lot of people pushing each other , people skipping lines , a lot of standing before I forget, and also not so smiley staff faces.....

All this struggle to get paid for the next month...

If you got connect (phyno's voice) your clearance should be very easy.

My First Day in Camp - Sagamu

My first day in camp

I travelled all the way from Delta State to Sagamu, Ogun state for the Orientation Camp. This was the beginning of May 2015, it was a really long trip by road which took about 5-6hrs. It felt like I was been taken to secondary school again. Along with me on the trip was my mum and the driver. I was all packed and ready to go. On getting to the gate, my mum was told she couldn't come in with me. I had to say my goodbyes and all *Tears*😭😭.

Moving on, was checked at the gate for contrabands and I remember sharing my Eclairs sweet with the securities there. *shine shine eyes*. I was cleared anyways, didn't take any unwanted items to Camp.

Getting into the building, all I could see was people - so many of them. Some had arrived earlier and were all done with registration and had also gotten their kits.

Got help with my luggages, apparently they were so many of them (The Helpers). But you know the drill you Gotta pay for the services being delivered.

P.s : when going to camp, pack light . I ended not using all I took to camp. Excess luggage but no charges 😃

Na the girl Sha help me carry my bag until I reach hostel. This made it easier for me to attend to some other registration issues I needed to sort out.

It was a very long day Sha, at the end of the day I couldn't complete my registration which I had to complete the following day.

The only thing that made me happy on that day was the new sleeping foam I got. There were some horrible foams tho.. OMG...

P.s: I got my own pillow from home..

I really don't understand why they made us register online and yet we had to repeat the whole process again in camp . We would discuss this later.

Drop your comments about your first day in camp.
